Boot Fitting 101

Boot Fitting Takes Time

You may need up to two hours with one of our proven boot fitters and may need to come back for some final tweaking after you ski your new boots.

Tonka Cycle & Ski Boot FittingSizing

  • Your foot length can increase by as much as a full size when arches collapse under body weight!
  • Our trained fitter will measure your feet when you’re seated and standing.
  • We will then select a few models that work for your foot shape.

Shell Size

  • We will take the liner out of the boot and have you step into the shell.
  • Ideally there is about five eighths to three quarters of an inch of space behind your heel when your toes just touch the front.
  • When the liner packs out, the shell will still support your foot.
  • We may suggest a better insole to support your foot in the boot; this will greatly increase your comfort and performance.

Compare Fits

  • We will put a different boot model on each foot.
  • Plan to spend at least 15 minutes in them.
  • The ball of your foot should sit flat and snug. Same with your heel.
  • As your foot warms up the boot, the liner will begin to mold to your foot.
  • The boots should feel better after this time.

Yes, they Should be Tight

  • New boots should feel snug, not painful or so restrictive as to cut off blood flow, but uniformly tight with no severe pressure points.
  • Your toes will touch the end of the boot when you stand up straight.
  • As soon as you flex the boots, your toes will pull back.

Hot Spots

  • Is the boot fine everywhere except for a few places (like on your yellowing bunions)?
  • YWe will tweak the fit by grinding or stretching the shell.

Final Adjustments

  • An alignment—adjusting the boot to better line-up the ankles with the knees and hipbones for a natural, athletic stance—will be the final step in your comprehensive boot fit.
  • Don’t even think of tweaking the canting or upper cuff without upgrading insoles!
